This handbook remains a popular textbook in composition programs around the country. Hairston was able to “see [it] into its eighth edition” before she died; that edition names Hairston as a “late” author on its title page (Ruszkiewicz, Faigley, and Hilfer). The handbook is divided into eight parts: Writing Process; Writing for Academic and Public Forums; Style; Design and Shape of Writing; Grammar; Punctuation and Mechanics; Research and Writing; and Documentation. The front inside cover contains a detailed, color-coded table of contents, and the back cover contains a quick reference guide to documentation in MLA, APA, and CMS styles, as well as a mini-guide to proofreading and editing symbols. This book includes numerous photos and other color images, and it references current literature, news items, and other pop culture details from the millennium zeitgeist. It also features frequent references to online environments and photos of real students next to their attendant writing samples.
