- The assessment of our Gen Ed required research writing course started with the question: “If qualities of good writing are context specific, what are the qualities of good writing in our local [EMU] context?” To identify these qualities, we:
- convened focus groups of students, faculty, staff, administrators from outside of the FYWP and FYWP instructors;
- analyzed transcripts using procedures drawn from dynamic criteria mapping to determine qualities of ‘good writing’
- developed an assessment instrument reflecting those qualities
- analyzed approximately 10% of the final portfolios from the course to learn about in what ways, and to what extent, work in the sample reflected qualities associated with “good writing” on our campus
