Because ours is a business university, Davenport University with multiple campuses throughout Michigan and Northern Indiana, we developed a second semester service-learning course. All students took the first semester course, but in the second semester students could choose between the traditional first-year composition course or the alternative we called Writing in the Workplace. It used some business formats such as memos, letters and a business report format for the research paper, although the readings and research topics focused on social issues related to the students’ service in nonprofit organizations in the community. The course was popular with students and the faculty who taught it, but in a major overhaul of the university and its curriculum to reduce the number of courses taught, it perished.
