At UC Davis, we also have a long-standing upper-division writing requirement that has multiple WID versions. Ours is taught within the independent University Writing Program, and our faculty generates new versions of these courses to meet requests from departments or that come out of their own interests. New versions begin as pilots, after approval by our curriculum committee, then they may be proposed as permanent additions if they have proven attractive to students.

Current versions in the catalog are as follows: 101 Advanced Composition (cross-disciplinary) 102A Writing in the Disciplines (cross-disciplinary) 102B WID: Biological Sciences 102C WID: History 102D WID: International Relations 102E WID: Engineering 102F WID: Food Science and Technology 102G WID: Bioregion 104A Writing in the Professions (WIP): Business and Technical 104B WIP: Law 104C WIP: Journalism 104D WIP: Elem. and Secondary Ed 104E WIP: Science 104F WIP: Health Professions.

The courses have a set of common goals, as the course descriptions on the program website show: http://writing program.ucdavis.edu The approval process looks for this coherence. Moreover, the assistant directors who supervise these courses regularly review syllabi, and our faculty evaluation process, which includes class visits, materials review, etc., also measures this adherence to the agreed-on goals. There’s a great deal of individual creativity that goes into these courses, but also a shared sense of the objectives for upper-division students.
