Responses from Session

We want to devote a substantial part of today’s session to an activity that invites you all to contribute to CompFAQs. Group work on a CompFAQs page (about 4 per group). 20 minutes: 10 minutes to brainstorm with the group, 10 minutes for groups to report.

Take an undeveloped FAQ and brainstorm. Use one the the questions below, or a new one. You can think of ways to expand the page, or create a template for the page, with headings / prompts that folks can “fill in” to contribute to the FAQ.

  • What is the most effective way of leading or renewing a WAC initiative on campus?
  • What are the arguments for requiring one comp course in the first year and another in the 3rd, instead of 2 courses in the first year?
  • What are the most effective methods of program assessment for a writing program?
  • What is the empirical evidence that Comp 101 is working?
  • How are SAT or ACT results used to determine placement? What is the value of the writing portions of these tests?
  • What is the evidence that teaching of grammar will improve the writing of students?
  • Should literature be used in the composition classroom? If so, how? If not, why?
  • How are students doing research now, in the age of the internet?
  • What curricular designs are available for FY writing programs?
  • How effective is peer critique?
  • What should be the role of the five-paragraph essay in writing courses?
  • What is the best arrangement for computer classrooms?
